Replace windscreen washer pump

Replace windscreen washer pump

It is very easy to replace the windscreen washer pump on a Mk1 Golf. No tools are needed.

The washer pump is simply "clipped" into the side of the windscreen washer fluid tank, located at the front left of the engine bay.

What you'll need

  • Washer pump, single outlet: Part number: 84137035
  • (Optional) Craft knife
  • (Optional) Zipties

Step 1: Unplug the wiring and disconnect the hose.

Simply unclip the wiring plug and carefully disconnect the hose.

Tip: If the hose will not come off and you are intending to re-use the pump, cut the hose slightly lengthways to help it release. Excessive pulling or wriggling could cause the plastic connector on the pump to snap.

Step 2: Pull out the pump

The pump is simply held in by friction - the shape of the windscreen washer tank "hugs" the pump keeping it in place. Pull the pump up and out.

Step 3: Install the new pump

Push the new pump into place. Be careful to align the long "tail" of the pump in the small hole at the bottom of the tank. Once snuggly clipped in, reattach the hose (use zipties to secure if you wish) and wiring plug.
